Description
This piece was minted circa 328 AD at Constantinople during the reign of
Constantine I, who ruled from 307-337 AD. Constantine is best known as
Rome's first Christian emperor, whose newfound faith is said to have led
him to victory over the usurper Maxentius. He is also responsible for the
Edict of Milan, which granted religious tolerance to the subjects of the
empire. The obverse of this type depicts the diademed head of Constantine
looking heavenward, with legends CONSTANTINVS.MAX.AVG. It is said that this
obverse style represents Constantine looking to the heavens, as he did
shortly before the battle of the Milvian Bridge, when he was said to have
seen a sign from God that he would be victorious. The reverse of this type
features Victory seated left on a cippus, holding a palm branch in each
hand and spurning captive at left. A trophy appears between Victory and the
captive, and the letter Delta appears above the captive. The legends
CONSTANTINIANA.DAFNE appear around, and the mint/oficina mark CONS appears
in the exergue. The reverse type was minted to mark the construction of the
fortress of Daphne on the Danube in 328 AD. Coin shows some reverse
porosity, but otherwise grades a nice VF, with clear devices and legends.
All coins guaranteed genuine without limitations. Buyer pays
