Lot # 834Estimate: US$9000
Constantine I, Crispus, and Constantine II. Heavy silver
miliarese
Constantine I, Crispus, and Constantine II. (307-337 AD). Heavy
silver miliarese (5.42 gm). Sirmium, ca. 320 AD. CONSTANTINVS MAX
AVG, head bare right / CRISPVS ET CONSTANTINVS CC, bare heads of the
two Caesars facing one another, SIRM below. RIC 14. Cohen 3 (100
Fr.). Gnecchi 1. Struck on a broad flan. Attractive purple
patination. Extremely fine.
Ex Leu 54, 28 April 1992, lot 325; ex Glendining, November 1969,
Fred Baldwin, lot 364.
According to Bastien, Monnaie et Donativa au bas-empire, this
medallic silver piece was probably distributed on the occasion of
Constantine痴 assumption of his sixth consulship in 320. It was
struck in two weights, both as a light miliarense, ca. 4.5 gm, and
as a heavy miliarense, ca. 5.4 gm. The heavier denomination is
substantially rarer, and among these heavy pieces ours was the
heaviest known specimen up to 1992.
... Lot 834 sold for high bid of $9000 [ $10350, or approx 7659 EUR, 7038 GBP including the 15% buyers premium.]
