Description
AUG - Constantine I - follis - Ticinum mint
Constantine I "the Great", AD 307-337. A bronze follis, 22mm
in diameter, attributed as C 514.
Obverse: Laureate, cuirassed bust right. Legend is
CONSTANTINVS PF AVG.
Reverse: Sol standing, facing left, holding globe. Legend is
SOL INVICTO COMITI with ST in exergue. Mint mark is Ticinum.
History: FLAVIVS VALERIVS CONSTANTINVS was born about 272 in
Moesia Superior to Constantius I and his first wife Helena.
Constantine was with his father in Britain in 306 when
Constantius died and he became Caesar. He became Augustus
about 307, and overcame all Maximian, Maxentius, and Licinius
to become the sole ruler of the Roman world in 324. He was
the first Christian emperor, being converted as early as 312,
but delaying his baptism until 337. He turned Byzantium into
the magnificent city of Constantinople, and was buried there
after dying of natural causes near Nicomedia on May 22, 337.
Condition: The coin is in VF condition, much more attractive
than scan.
