Ex Dr. Reinaldo Gomez Collection.
While cataloguing this coin, C. Clay observed that the same reverse die had earlier been used without the letters S C: see Munzen und Medaillen 66, 23-24 October 1984, lot 554 and NFA XVI, 2 December 1985, lot 369. It was known that Nero's first issue of bronze coins at Rome omitted the usual letters S C, while his second and later issues, using mainly the same reverse types, included S C, but this is apparently the first time that the letters S C have been observed being added to an actual reverse die, which was accordingly used first in Issue 1 without S C, then latter in Issue 2 with S C! The Munzen und Medaillen coin quoted also proves that the wall of the Praetorian camp in the upper background of the reverse, though invisible on our specimen because of die and specimen wear, was nevertheless present on the die in its original state.
Estimate: US$3500
