Nero (AD 54-68). Orichalcum sestertius (20.26 gm). Lugdunum,
AD 64-66. NERO CLAVD CAESAR AVG GER P M TR P IMP P P, laureate head left, globe at tip of neck / PORT AVG (inverted in exergue) S-C, two curved moles enclosing eight ships in the harbor of Ostia, statue atop lighthouse above, Neptune reclining below. WCN 427. RIC 441 (R2). A rare type at Lugdunum, very rare with a left-facing portrait: not in Cohen or BMCRE, reported by MacDowall only from a single specimen in BM, presumably acquired after the publication of BMCRE. Dark green-brown patina. Very fineCurious legend placement on reverse: short legends in exergue are usually right side up! The number of ships shown in the harbor in this type varies, but the four most important ones, usually present and showing four successive stages in a ship's use of the harbor, are the two left and right of the lighthouse, one entering the harbor under full sail and the other being rowed out of the harbor; the large ship in the center, which has recently arrived and cast anchor and whose sails are being taken in by several sailors on deck and in the rigging; and finally, a ship alongside the quay between 8:00 and 9:00 whose cargo is being unloaded by one man on deck and a second crossing the gangplank to shore. On the present specimen, this fourth ship has been placed a little lower in the type and the gangplank with man crossing it have been left out, suggesting that the engraver was attempting to create a pleasing scene of ships in the harbor, without fully understanding the concept of the original type. This die also omits both the man who is usually shown sacrificing at an altar before the temple at the top end of the left mole, and the figure seated on rock who, on Rome-mint dies, is usually shown above the upper end of the right mole..
