Ex Tkalec AG, Zurich sale February 2, 2000, 241. The representation of the Ianuculum with closed doors commemorates the largest success Nero had in Foreign Affairs during the whole reign. It was preceeded by military campaigns in Armenia where the Roman army fought the Parthians with mixed results. The Parthians wanted to put the brother of their king on the Armenian throne. As an exception to the usual procedure, the Parthian king Vologases I tried to achieve this goal with diplomacy. He agreed with Nero that his brother Tiridates would travel to Rome in order to receive the royal diadem from the hand of the Roman emperor. The heir apparent spent ca. 800'000 sestertii a day on his trip to Rome which took him 9 months! Nero made a big event at his arrival and succeeded in even being applauded by the fast growing number of opponents to his regime. The ritual closing of the doors of the Ianiculum as symbol of peace was part of the ceremony and was commemorated in a series of issues. The Parthians too were very impressed and even years after Nero's death they granted royal asylum to an impostor who pretended to be the former Roman emperor. "
