Description
Nero, 54-68 A.D.
Sestertius, 64 A.D. Rome. Laureate bust r. with traces of aegis, [NERO CLAV]DIVS CAESAR AVG. GERM. P.M. TR.P. COS. Rv. Triumphal arch with statue of emperor in facing quadriga flanked by figures of Victory and Pax, figure of Mars in niche to l. RIC 149 var. An interesting variant, substituting COS. for IMP. P.P. in the obverse legend. Dark mahogany patina, extensively smoothed in the fields. Bold portrait and reverse design. Choice Very Fine. (700-900)
The appearance of COS in the legend rather than the usual IMP. P.P. is curious. BMC p.222 (no.133) mentions another Sestertius of Nero where the obverse legend was altered to COS II P.P. and where the obverse aegis had been obliterated. The present coin shows no evidence of re-engraving of an existing design. The changes, both in the legend and the removal of the aegis, appear to have been made in the die. The motivation for the removal of the aegis (a symbol of divinity) and the title IMPERATOR would be fascinating to pursue. An effort to locate other such pieces could certainly lead to some interesting speculations.
