Possibly a unique variety lacking SC. Dark green and red patina wtih areas of roughness and light smoothing. Well struck on a medallic flan. Nearly extremely fine
Ex Vecchi 16, 9 October 1999, lot 419; Francesco Gnecchi Collection.
In his RIN article of 1905, Gnecchi mentions this sestertius as having been found at excavations at Rome the previous year. MacDowall subsequently questioned whether the SC was removed from the reverse exergue in the modern era and left it out of the main body of WCN. Whereas some smoothing of the fields is evident, it hardly seems significant enough to have eradicated the characters altogether. Hence, there is good cause to reconfirm thesestertius’ place among the rare Nero bronzes lacking reference to the Senate.
Estimate: $5,000
